Hi, I’m Mia.
I’m a Director, Producer, and Cinematographer adopted from China, raised in Michigan, and based in Los Angeles.
Here’s what I’m up to now:
My short documentary film, A Good Death (DOC NYC), has finished its festival run and we are currently seeking online distribution. Subscribe to our mailing list to stay up to date.
The other two most recent short documentaries I directed – Mr. Ramen and Are We Breaking Up? – are currently awaiting festival premieres at and will be coming to a theater near you soon.
The same goes for Bug and Wasabi, the two most recent narrative short films I was the cinematographer for.
I have several projects I’m developing, including (but not limited to) one about orcas and one about a national record-holding freediver. If either of these topics sparks your interest, please reach out.

Mia Hagerty is a filmmaker adopted from China and raised in Michigan. A former pragmatist, she studied math in college only to realize that being pragmatic is overrated.
Her most recent short film, A Good Death (DOC NYC), was a BAFTA Student Award finalist. Her work has also screened at the American Cinematheque, Los Angeles’ iconic Chinese Theatre, and at a ramen shop. Originally a self-taught filmmaker, Mia formed Missing In Action Productions, where she directed, produced, and lensed over fifty short documentaries, branded content spots, and music videos. She holds an MFA from the University of Southern California and is based in Los Angeles.
Sometimes tending toward a nihilistic view on life, Mia is ultimately an optimist who believes that a great story really can change the world – by changing us first.
